Seven solutions to the problem of cat litter and unpleasant odor. What is the self-cleaning smart sand tray?

Your cat is the cutest, most loving, most beautiful being in your life... until they drop a bomb in their sandbox, toxic enough to clear out the buildings and send the villagers fleeing into the mountains.

1. Clean sandboxes daily

The best way to reduce litter box odors is to get rid of the things that cause the bad smell. Clean the boxes at least once a day (preferably twice). Not only will your cat be happy, but you will be too.Clumping litter can often be easier to sprinkle and keep clean, and having a low-dust litter is important, especially if you have a cat with asthma or breathing problems.

And it's not just your nose that doesn't like having multiple surprises in the sandbox; But also your cat. Cats are more likely to urinate and defecate outside the box if there are a lot of “bombs” to move around!

If you're tempted to ditch the hassle and get an automatic litter box, wait before throwing out your old litter box until you've put the new one to the test. Cats may be frightened by the noise of automatic cleaning, which may cause them to look for other places to relieve themselves. Even if you keep your cat's litter boxes perfectly clean, there's another piece to the smelly mess puzzle: the litter box.

2. Wash your cat's sandbox periodically

If you clean at least once a day, it will be much easier to clean the boxes when the time comes. Once a month, empty the litter out of your cat's boxes and deep clean them (be sure to wear gloves to protect yourself from any pathogens related to urine and feces that can infect humans as well).

Simply use soap and water to clean the bins. The smell of bleach and other chemicals from harsh cleaners can cause your cat to avoid his box even after you've cleaned it. To finish the process, dry the boxes and add new sand.

3. Replace the boxes

Over time, boxes can become scratched from frequent scratching as your cat buries its droppings. These scratches are great places for bacteria to take shelter and create a smelly haven.

Make sure to replace the boxes about once a year.

When looking for a litter box for your cat (or kitten), be sure to consider these features:

The box should be at least as long as your cat's length from the tips of its nose to the tips of its tail (when extended).

- At least one side should be low so that your cat can get in and out easily and comfortably.

4. Add more appropriately sized boxes

Boxes that are too small mean your cat will have less… let's call it “personal space,” and will be more likely to bang against the sides of the box or simply drop their droppings anywhere, whether that's inside the box or directly next to it. They will also have less room to move and therefore have more difficulty burying their droppings.

Also, make sure to get a box with low enough sides so your cat can get through easily. If your cat's climb into the litter box is like climbing Mount Everest, your cat won't be willing to get tired.

5. Continuous ventilation

Many people tend to place their cat's boxes in a small, confined space that is far from the livable space of their house or apartment. This is understandable, but doing so concentrates the scents in just one point. So instead of allowing the smell to evaporate, you may end up with a closet that smells awful and indescribable.

Not only will you likely avoid this space, but your cat will as well – and this will likely lead to a mess. Instead, place the boxes in well-ventilated (but not draughty) areas. The same applies to covered funds. Sure, you may not see or smell what's going on, but beneath that ceiling lies a strong, concentrated odor zone.

And your cat will not be thrilled to enter it. However, some cats prefer covered boxes, so it will take some experimentation to discover what your cat likes.

6. Use bicarbonate of soda

If you still have odor problems, try sprinkling a little baking soda on the bottom of the box before adding new litter each week, or placing an open box of baking soda in the same area where the box is. This can help absorb some odors without adding irritants that may irritate your cat's sensitive nose and lungs.

No matter what action you take, do not use lotions or sprays near the box. This may temporarily mask the odors, but will irritate your cat's sensitive nose and lungs (or worse). In fact, using sprays, perfumes, and other scents may even discourage your cat from using their boxes altogether.

7. Clean up the mess quickly and thoroughly

Use an enzyme cleanser Simple Solution Surface Cleaner for Cats and Dogs is good for dealing with any toilet accident if your cat has missed the box (such as being near it). A good, thorough cleaning will remove the odor, prevent the development of odors over time, and prevent your cat from going outside of their boxes in the future.
